ambitio Framework
THE FAILURE MODE
Hard work is not the scarce resource.
When you can ship every week, the usual failure is not laziness. It is effort aimed at the wrong thing. You burn calendar, capital, and willpower — and the mission barely moves. Exhaustion and expense without benefit.
THE STACK
One hierarchy. Nothing optional out of order.
Each layer exists only to serve the one above it. Agents unlock the next step when the previous one is honest.
- 01
Venture
A validated idea with a clear mission — the reason the work exists.
- 02
Strategy
How you intend to fulfill that mission. Not a slogan: a set of answers you can lock and revisit when evidence says the hypothesis is broken.
- 03
North Star goals
Exactly three qualitative goals for the year (or the runway you still have if you start mid-year). Ambition first — the outcomes that move you closest to the mission.
- 04
Targets
Three to five measurable proofs per goal. Numbers live here, not in the goal title. Targets lead thinking for the quarter.
- 05
Quarterly goals & targets
Exactly three qualitative ninety-day outcomes that advance the North Star, each with their own measurable targets.
- 06
Action plans
Time-bound, resource-constrained work packages. One plan ties to exactly one target; one target may have many plans.
- 07
Actions
The specific steps inside a plan — concrete enough to do, constrained enough that busywork cannot hide.
STRATEGY
Strategy is answers — not a slide deck.
We take John Doerr’s definition from Measure What Matters: strategy is the collection of answers to four questions. Ambitio makes those answers concrete with ten first-principles prompts you lock with the strategy agent.
GOALS & TARGETS
Ambition first. Measurement next. Ninety days after that.
Goals are results, not tasks. Targets are the scoreboard. Quarterly work exists to move the year — never as a parallel plan.
- 01
North Star goals
Three qualitative annual outcomes. No numbers in the wording. Stretch for the time you actually have — including if you join mid-year.
- 02
Attach targets
Three to five measurable targets per goal, with units and dates. This is what weekly reviews update and what quarterly goals must move.
- 03
Quarterly goals & targets
Three ninety-day outcomes that advance named North Star goals, each with targets that lead the annual scoreboard — preferably as leading indicators, not copies of the year-end number.
ACTION PLANS
Plans serve one target. Never the other way around.
An action plan can only be tied to one target. A target may have many plans. Plans — and the actions inside them — are time-bound, resource-constrained, and specific. That constraint is the point: execution stays attached to a measurable promise.
In the product today, agents deliver the shipped loop — strategy, Goals & Targets, and reviews — while Action Plans complete the execution layer of the same framework. One target. Several constrained plans. No orphan busywork.
CADENCE
Living priorities — not goals filed until day 90.
Reviews are sequential and time-bound. Past-due items must be cleared before later ones unlock. The calendar keeps the loop honest.
Weekly review
Every MondayTen to fifteen minutes: update target numbers, name blockers and wins, align next week to quarterly targets. No strategy pivot here — just truth and focus.
Mid-quarter review
Middle of the quarterPulse-check: continue, update, rescore, or drop quarterly goals and targets if conditions shifted. Recovery plans before the quarter closes. Strategy or quarterly pivots may open here.
Quarterly review & set
Last week of the quarterGrade what happened, capture learnings, and set the next quarter. This is also the window to pivot North Star goals and targets when the year needs a new aim.
Annual review & set
DecemberEvaluate the year against market, mission, and the four quarters. Set next year’s North Star and first quarter. Strategy can pivot if the hypothesis is broken.
LINEAGE
Built from hard-won practice — then made Ambitio’s own.
The framework draws on teachings from Google’s OKR practice, John Doerr, Alex Hormozi, Y Combinator, and Elon Musk — then reworks them into one ambition-management system: mission → strategy → North Star → quarterly scoreboard → constrained execution → honest review.
